GitHub Spark Stops Taking New Users on August 4; Existing Apps Can Be Exported Until August 31

GitHub announced the upcoming deprecation of GitHub Spark in a changelog entry on August 4, 2026¹. From that date, Spark accepts no new users and does not allow the creation of new apps¹. Existing users have access until August 31, 2026 to export apps they have already created¹. Exporting means opening the Spark workbench for the app, selecting ”…”, then selecting “Create repository”¹.

Apps already deployed will continue to work after Spark is retired¹. However, GitHub Models — the inference service used by Spark’s llm() function — retired on July 30, 2026, and as of that date calls to llm() no longer work¹².

GitHub gives as its reason that AI models and agentic development tools have advanced significantly, and that builders can now build and refine these experiences through GitHub Copilot in the environments where they already work, including VS Code, Copilot CLI, and the GitHub Copilot app¹.
