GPT-6 Astra Is Generally Available in GitHub Copilot - Four Plans, Enabled by Default

GitHub announced on September 4, 2026 that OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra is now available in GitHub Copilot¹.

• Plans: Copilot Pro+, Max, Business and Enterprise¹. The model picker offers it in Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, Copilot CLI, the Copilot coding agent, the GitHub Copilot app, github.com, GitHub Mobile on iOS and Android, JetBrains IDEs, Xcode and Eclipse¹. Rollout is gradual, so it may not appear yet¹
• Billing: usage-based, at provider list pricing. The changelog gives no figures, only a link to the pricing page¹
• Administrators: Business and Enterprise admins manage access through the model policy in Copilot settings. Under default model enablement, new models are enabled automatically unless an admin has turned off the global default or explicitly disabled this model¹

GitHub says that in internal testing, Astra stood out for how it works rather than only what it produces: it plans and validates as it goes, batches diagnosis with verification, and independently confirms its results before declaring a task done — which, the company says, translated into stronger performance on long-horizon coding tasks with fewer steps than prior OpenAI models¹. For organizations that decide which models their developers may use, leaving the default in place means Astra is added automatically, so it is worth checking against the enterprise-managed setting for specifying a default model announced on September 2 that the result is what was intended.
