GitHub said in an August 7, 2026 changelog entry that the Copilot usage metrics API now reports agent app activity, delivered through a new optional totals_by_3rd_party_agent array 1. Previously, agent activity in usage metrics was effectively a single bucket, according to GitHub 1.
Each element of the array carries the agent’s display name agent_name, a stable identifier agent_id, the number of user-initiated agent app job starts user_initiated_interaction_count, and the number of agent app sessions session_count (aggregated reports only) 1. GitHub says this lets teams track individual agent apps separately across enterprise, organization, and per-user metrics, in both the 1-day and 28-day reporting periods 1. The nested user_initiated_interaction_count is distinct from the top-level field of the same name and should not be summed together, the entry notes 1.
Access is available to enterprise owners, billing managers, organization owners, and users with appropriate custom roles, provided the Copilot usage metrics policy is enabled 1. The same day, GitHub also added a return on investment section to the Copilot impact dashboard.
