Windsurf Rebrands as Devin Desktop - From IDE to Agent Management Hub

Cognition announced on June 2, 2026 that it has relaunched the AI coding editor Windsurf as “Devin Desktop”¹. The company describes the release as “the next generation of Windsurf,” delivered as a regular over-the-air (OTA) update¹². Users who update the editor on or after June 2 are automatically switched over to Devin Desktop³.

The change goes beyond a simple renaming. The first screen users now see on launch is no longer the familiar code editor but the “Agent Command Center,” a view for managing running agents³. It is a design shift that moves the product’s center of gravity from an IDE for writing code to a hub for orchestrating multiple AI agents.

Agent Command Center and Spaces - Managing Agents in One Place

The Agent Command Center lets users manage every local and cloud agent from a single Kanban view¹. Each agent carries a status such as “in progress,” “blocked,” or “ready for review,” giving an at-a-glance overview of work on the board³.

The release also introduces “Spaces,” a new way to share context between agents while grouping sessions, pull requests, and files¹. The design assumes a workflow in which multiple agents handle separate tasks in parallel.

ACP Support Brings Third-Party Agents Into the Editor

One of Devin Desktop’s defining features is support for the open Agent Client Protocol (ACP). According to the official announcement, Devin Desktop supports Codex, Claude Agent, OpenCode, and any other ACP-compatible agents¹. These third-party agents run natively at launch³.

Rather than privileging only its own agent, Cognition is letting competitors’ agents run in the same interface — a strategy that appears aimed at making the editor itself the place where developers keep their agents.

Devin Local Replaces Cascade - Migration Deadline Is July 1

Cascade, the local agent at the core of Windsurf, is being replaced by the new “Devin Local.” Cognition has completely rewritten the local agent from scratch in Rust, and Devin Local is up to 30% more token efficient while supporting features such as subagents¹. According to the official FAQ, Devin Local runs the same architecture as Devin CLI and uses the exact same pricing model as Cascade².

Existing users should note the migration deadline. The legacy Cascade agent remains available only through July 1, 2026, after which it will be discontinued¹²³. Any CI pipelines or automation scripts that explicitly invoke Cascade will need to be switched over to Devin Local before the deadline.

On the practical side, file paths migrate from the legacy ~/.windsurf/ to ~/.devin/². In corporate environments, the official FAQ also advises adding Devin to the allowlist in device management (MDM) policies².

Plans and Pricing Unchanged

Existing users keep their plan, pricing, extensions, and other features as they are¹. The official FAQ states that “your current plan continues to work exactly as it does today” and that pricing is unchanged². Devin Review, the company’s code review product, is also reported to now be included in all existing plans at no additional cost³.

The Final Chapter of the 2025 Acquisition Saga

The rebrand also marks the endpoint of the dramatic series of deals surrounding Windsurf in the summer of 2025. In July 2025, just hours after OpenAI’s $3 billion offer to acquire Windsurf expired, Google hired away Windsurf CEO Varun Mohan, co-founder Douglas Chen, and research leaders in a $2.4 billion reverse-acquihire⁵. Days later, on July 14, Cognition — the maker of Devin — announced it would acquire Windsurf’s IP, product, trademark and brand, and business⁴.

At the time of the acquisition, Windsurf had $82 million in ARR (annual recurring revenue), more than 350 enterprise customers, and hundreds of thousands of daily active users⁴. Roughly eleven months later, the Windsurf brand has now been folded into the Devin family.

The design philosophy — shifting the editor’s protagonist from the human writing code to multiple agents working in parallel — mirrors a broader trend across the AI coding tool industry.
