Cursor Start: India-Only Plan at Rs649 (~$7) per Month Is Cursor's First Regional Pricing

Cursor launched Cursor Start, an India-exclusive plan at Rs649 (~$7) per month vs. $20 for Pro. Built on Cursor's own models like Grok 4.5 and Composer, with UPI payment support. Why India — 3M+ developers, its third-largest market — and what it signals ahead of the $60B SpaceX acquisition.

Cursor Start: India-Only Plan at Rs649 (~$7) per Month Is Cursor's First Regional Pricing

Cursor, the AI code editor, announced Cursor Start on July 28, 2026 — a lower-priced plan exclusively for developers in India1. It costs ₹649 per month, tax inclusive (roughly $7), well below the standard $20 Pro plan12. Billing is monthly in INR, payable by card or UPI, India’s ubiquitous instant-payment system1. According to TechCrunch, India is the first market where Cursor has localized its pricing2.

The launch also comes as SpaceX’s $60 billion all-stock acquisition of Cursor, agreed in June and expected to close in Q3, approaches the finish line2. Locking in Cursor’s user base in a fast-growing market ahead of the close is a natural read of the timing.

What’s in the Plan: Cursor’s Own Models Make $7 Work

Cursor Start includes “generous access” to Cursor’s models, including Grok 4.5 and Composer; more agent requests than the Free plan across desktop, web, iOS, and the CLI; always-on cloud agents for long-running tasks; the Cursor for iOS mobile app; and support for plugins, MCP servers, hooks, and skills1.

On why the price works, Simon Green, Cursor’s head of Asia-Pacific and Japan, explained that the plan is built around Cursor’s own AI models, which carry lower operating costs than relying primarily on third-party frontier models2. Grok 4.5 was trained jointly with SpaceX’s AI division — see our story on the Grok 4.5 launch for that backstory. Freed from third-party API fees, regional pricing becomes a viable lever.

The plan is available only to developers in India. Existing Free users can upgrade from the dashboard, and new users can pick it at signup1.

Why India: Tripled in a Year to 3M+ Developers

According to Cursor, its user base in India has more than tripled over the past year to over 3 million developers, making India its third-largest market globally — and developers there run more agent requests per developer than anywhere else1. The two things Indian users kept asking for, the company says: pricing that reflects the local market, and the ability to pay with UPI1.

The addressable market is enormous. GitHub reports India has more than 27 million developers, second only to the United States2. Cursor recently hired its first salesperson in India and expects additional leadership in Delhi plus support hires across Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Mumbai2. “The technical competency of the country and the engineering talent that already exists make it a very natural fit,” Green said2.

The Backstory: From SpaceX Partnership to Acquisition

Cursor’s relationship with SpaceX began with a partnership in April 2026 and led to the acquisition agreement announced in June2. Product integration moved first — most visibly the jointly trained Grok 4.5. Cursor has also kept extending across the development lifecycle, including its acquisition of code-review platform Graphite.

Competition on price in AI coding tools is fierce. As our pricing comparison of major AI coding tools lays out, roughly $20 per month has been the standard tier across the field. A ~$7 regional plan undercuts that norm.

Regional Pricing Becomes a Variable

For readers outside India, Cursor Start itself is off the menu, but it carries two signals. First, regional pricing for AI coding tools is now real. If the economics hold in India, expansion to other markets — or competitive responses — could follow, which matters for tool-cost planning. Whether a Japan-specific price emerges is worth watching.

Second, the cost structure behind the discount is vertical integration: using in-house models instead of paying frontier-model API rates. That shift — from third-party API fees setting the price floor to own-model economics — is emerging across the industry, not just at Cursor. When evaluating tools, “which models does the plan actually use, and is their quality sufficient for your work” matters as much as the monthly price. How Cursor’s product and pricing strategy evolves after the SpaceX acquisition closes in Q3 is the next thing to watch.
