Claude Cowork Comes to Mobile and Web - Anthropic's Data Shows Over 90% of Usage Isn't Coding

Anthropic announced on July 7, 2026 that Claude Cowork, its AI agent for everyday work tasks, is expanding to mobile and web¹. Cowork is an AI agent feature that lets users hand off work tasks — building documents, organizing data, preparing reports — to Claude. It launched as a desktop app in January 2026². Alongside the expansion, Anthropic published usage data that drew attention of its own: more than 90% of Cowork usage was everyday knowledge work rather than software development, a finding that challenges the assumption that AI agents are primarily developer tools¹.

Work That Doesn’t Stop When You Leave Your Desk

The core of this release is decoupling work from any single device. You can start a task at your desk, check its progress from your phone, and pick up the finished output somewhere else entirely. Close the laptop and head to a meeting — Claude keeps going in the background¹³.

Scheduled tasks now run even when no device is online at all¹. In Anthropic’s example, you can set Monday’s client prep for 6 am: Claude works through the email threads, transcripts, and recent news, builds the briefing document, and leaves a follow-up email drafted but unsent¹.

On the web, Cowork sessions start from the home screen at claude.ai. On mobile, Cowork opens from the sidebar of the Claude app for iOS and Android. The full experience remains on the desktop app¹.

The Data: Over 90% of Usage Is Non-Development

According to the usage data Anthropic published, more than 90% of Cowork usage was something other than software development, with business operations and content creation as the largest categories¹. Those two categories alone account for roughly half of all usage³.

TechCrunch reports that the data is based on 1.2 million anonymized sessions from more than 600,000 organizations, sampled in May 2026. Business process operations led at 33.4%, followed by content creation and copywriting at 16.4%, while software development accounted for just 8.7%². Representative tasks include pulling scattered updates into a single report, building onboarding checklists, and reconciling spreadsheets².

For a product born from the company best known for coding agents, the data shows usage spreading well beyond engineering — which also explains the logic of this expansion. Developers sit in front of desktops; business users’ work continues in meeting rooms and on the move.

Availability and Promotion

The mobile and web beta reaches Max plan users first, rolling out over the next several weeks¹. To mark the launch, Anthropic is extending its doubled Cowork usage limits through August 5¹.

Anthropic has been pushing beyond its developer base recently, including making Claude Sonnet 5 the default model for free users in late June. Extending its agent from a desktop-only specialist tool to infrastructure that works anywhere continues that trajectory — and for organizations considering delegating document preparation and data work to AI, it lowers the barrier to entry another notch.
