Anthropic Is Hiring a Custom Silicon Team to Co-Design Chips for Claude

Anthropic has posted roles for a custom silicon team. The Silicon Engineer role pays $320,000-$485,000 and asks for engineers who have shipped silicon; a chip-design RL role pays $500,000-$850,000. The company says it will keep relying on AWS, Google, Nvidia and AMD hardware.

Anthropic has published job listings for a “custom silicon team” that would design chips in-house 13. On August 5, TechCrunch reported that the company confirmed it is planning to co-design hardware and models to help its technology run faster and more efficiently 4.

The listing opens by stating that “Anthropic runs some of the largest AI training and inference workloads in the world, across multiple hardware platforms” 1. It describes the team as a way to deepen the company’s investment in chip-level work 1.

What the Listings Reveal About the Team

The central role is Silicon Engineer, based in San Francisco, New York City, or Seattle, with an annual salary range of $320,000 to $485,000 1. The listing says “you will be one of a small number of people covering a large surface” 1 — this is not the description of a large semiconductor division being stood up.

The responsibilities listed include writing “the specifications and interface definitions that others design against,” making directional calls on technology selection and build-versus-buy, partnering with “Anthropic’s inference, performance, kernels, and infrastructure teams,” and supporting first-silicon bring-up and debug 1.

The requirements are equally concrete: deep expertise in at least one silicon domain such as front-end design, verification, or physical design; direct contribution to silicon that taped out and shipped; and experience working with external partners including ASIC houses, IP vendors, foundries, and test partners 1. In the listing’s own words, “this is a role for someone who has shipped silicon, has a realistic relationship with schedules, and is comfortable making consequential calls without a large organization behind them” 1. Practical experience with AI coding tools also appears among the requirements — a detail that fits the employer 1.

A Role for Teaching Claude to Design Chips

The Chip Design RL listing is the other one worth reading 2. It states that the hiring is “for the Code RL team within the RL organization” — a different team from the custom silicon one 2. The role builds reinforcement-learning environments and evaluations for agentic RTL generation, design verification, physical design optimization, and EDA-tool optimization, at a salary range of $500,000 to $850,000 — higher than the Silicon Engineer band 2.

The listing states the reasoning plainly: “Hardware design is difficult and unforgiving – exactly the sort of domain we want Claude to excel at” 2. So the effort is not only to hire people who design chips, but also to use chip design as material for improving the model.

Adding “Design” to “Rent” and “Buy”

Until now, Anthropic’s work here has been about securing compute. In July, AMD began volume production of its Helios rack system and announced a partnership under which Anthropic would deploy up to 2 gigawatts of Instinct MI450 series GPUs, with AMD committing up to $5 billion in strategic investment. Securing capacity has become a strategy in itself across the industry, as in SSI’s long-term partnership with Nvidia, and credit lines secured against inference chips have appeared as well.

What is being added is work further upstream — not a replacement for the rest. According to Techzine, an Anthropic spokesperson said the company will keep a “multi-chip” approach, with hardware from AWS, Google, Nvidia, and AMD remaining central 5. That is consistent with the listing’s own opening line about running “across multiple hardware platforms” 1.

How to Read This

What the listings establish is that a team is being assembled. What is being built and when it might ship are not in the public listings or in this week’s reporting. On manufacturing, Techzine reports — citing The Information — that Anthropic had been in talks with Samsung as a potential manufacturing partner 5; Anthropic itself has not confirmed this. Silicon takes years to go from specification to shipment, so reading these postings as a signal about near-term prices or performance would overstate them.

With that said, the direction of the cost structure is worth watching for anyone running Claude in production. Inference cost is the product of model efficiency and hardware efficiency. A model developer writing its own chip specifications is a move to hold both sides of that product. Whether it pays off is a question for several years out — but the assumption that the model comes from one company and the chip from another is now being tested by the model developers themselves.
