OpenAI Codex 0.153: Plugin CLI Gains Remote Marketplace Support
OpenAI shipped Codex 0.153.0 on September 3, 2026 and 0.153.4 on September 4. The plugin CLI can now install from remote marketplaces, an experimental context-management setting arrives, and 0.153.4 makes Astra the bundled default model.
OpenAI released version 0.153.0 of its coding agent Codex on September 3, 2026, followed by hotfixes through 0.153.4 by September 41. The hotfixes that followed 0.153.0, through 0.153.4, all concern GPT-6 Astra.
- The plugin CLI can now list, install, and remove plugins from remote marketplaces
- A disabled-by-default
features.context_management.experimental_modesetting was added. When enabled, it activates token-budget context, history notes, and thenew_contexttool. It applies to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Pro Lite sessions using the Codex backend; API-key sessions and custom providers are excluded - In 0.153.4, Astra’s visibility in the bundled model picker was fixed and it became the bundled default when no model is explicitly configured2
Now that the plugin CLI can work with remote marketplaces, anyone deploying it picks up the work of deciding which marketplaces to trust. The context-management change is experimental and plan-limited, so behavior only shifts in environments that turn it on. Separately, 0.152.0 turned the planning tool off by default.
