The company describes it as the first dual-architecture mainframe processor, designed so that rather than carrying separate Arm and IBM cores, each core can natively execute Arm and IBM Z — or Arm and LinuxONE — instructions concurrently1.
According to IBM, the design is built on a 2 nanometer technology node and will contain 11 high-performance cores operating at more than 5.7 GHz, AI inference accelerators for in-transaction fraud detection, and an on-chip data processing unit (DPU) for I/O acceleration1. The stated aim is to bring the Arm software ecosystem — which IBM puts at more than 22 million developers worldwide — onto these platforms as Arm-native Linux environments running simultaneously with z/OS and Linux on IBM Z1.
