The Pentagon Adds ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government to GenAI.mil

Two more frontier models reached GenAI.mil, the US Department of War’s internal generative AI platform, on August 31, 2026: OpenAI’s ChatGPT Mil and Starshield AI’s Grok for Government, announced in two separate releases the same day¹². The department calls GenAI.mil its premier generative AI platform¹².

• Per reporting, ChatGPT Mil carries an Impact Level 5 accreditation and is meant for handling CUI (controlled unclassified information). What ships at the outset: chat, files, projects, and custom GPTs³
• Per the same reporting, the department counts more than 1.7 million unique users on GenAI.mil, drawn from a population of over 3 million personnel³
• The reason the department gave for bringing in Grok, as reported, was to eliminate vendor lock-in³

Google Gemini was already running on the platform before these two arrived, so the models on offer there now span several vendors³. A department that says out loud it does not want to depend on a single supplier is a useful reference point for anyone weighing whether to standardize internally on one AI provider. On August 27, a US federal court vacated the department’s “supply chain risk” designation of Anthropic.
