Anthropic announced on August 4, 2026 that Mariano-Florentino (Tino) Cuéllar will join the company as its first Chief Global Affairs Officer1. He will lead Anthropic’s work on policy, strategic international engagement, and government relationships worldwide1.
Cuéllar recently stepped down as President of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, an independent global policy research institution with scholars in 20 countries1. Before that he was a Justice of the Supreme Court of California, where his opinions addressed technology and privacy, international agreements, and the separation of powers1. At Stanford he directed the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies and the Stanford Cyber Initiative1. He has served as a Trustee of Anthropic’s Long-Term Benefit Trust since January 2026 and has stepped down from the Trust to join the company1. In the announcement, Cuéllar said democracies must set the terms on which the technology advances, and that there is no more consequential place to be shaping that work right now than Anthropic1. The company also set out its position on open-weights model regulation in July, continuing a run of policy-facing statements.
