GitHub announced in a changelog entry on August 6, 2026 that the open-weight Kimi K3 model is now generally available in GitHub Copilot 1. GitHub describes the model as showing frontier-level abilities on agentic coding with highly cost-effective pricing 1. GitHub hosts it on Fireworks AI, billed at provider list pricing under usage-based billing 1. The model whose full weights Moonshot AI published in July has now become an option inside a major U.S. developer tool.
The model is rolling out gradually to Copilot Pro, Pro+, Max, Business, and Enterprise plans 1. It can be selected in the model picker in Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, Copilot CLI, the Copilot cloud agent, the Copilot app, github.com, GitHub Mobile for iOS and Android, JetBrains, Xcode, and Eclipse 1.
The detail that matters for enterprise deployments is the default. Kimi K3 is off by default for Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise, and plan administrators must enable the Kimi K3 policy in Copilot settings before anyone in the organization can select it 1. GitHub recommends that administrators review open-weight models against their own security, compliance, and data-governance requirements before enabling them 1. An editor’s note on the entry adds that the rollout is temporarily paused while GitHub mitigates an incident with GitHub Actions, and that pricing will be $3 per 1M input tokens, $15 per 1M output tokens, and $0.30 per 1M cached input tokens 1.
